How to Make Your Own DIY Floating Shelves

If you have been anywhere on Pinterest lately searching kitchens and bathroom renovations, you have seen all sorts of floating shelves.

I love kitchens with subway tile and so many have the stained wooden open shelves in them. These are so versatile and have endless options on where to use and how to decorate. I love them and decided we needed some in our small ½ bath.  It’s a small bathroom and just need some extra storage + make it pretty.  Isn’t that what’s important is all the pretty things??

You will need a few tools to do this project; however, when we went to Home Depot to get the 2×8 board we had them cut it to the desired length.  I use this option as much as I possibly can! It helps so much in saving time and a step that I don’t have to worry about.  You could go with a smaller width board, but I love having that depth so I can decorate.  Because, isn’t that really the point?

You will need some basic supplies, listed below:

  • 2×8 board
  • dowel rod
  • spade bit ¾”
  • tape measure
  • drill
  • wood glue
  • screws
  • level
  • desired paint or stain

The next step is to cut 2” off the side of that you drilled your holes in.  The smaller 2” becomes your bracket that you will screw to the wall.

I had the board cut down into 2’ lengths so that it would fit my space.  We had an 8’ board so I could actually have made 4 shelves. For what I needed, I only did 2. I took my ¾” spade bit and drilled 3 holes in the narrow side of the board down at least 3” deep. This is the very first step you need to do.  It is important to do this first before you go on to the next step.

You will need to then take your dowel rod and cut 3 of them into 3”. These will end up connecting the boards together on the wall.

Once you have done that, glue the dowel rods into the smaller side.

Stain the shelves or paint whichever one you prefer for your décor. I ended up using a dark walnut stain. You are now ready to hang!!

Attach the small 2” board with dowel rods glued and coming out from the wall.  This is where you will need your screws, level, and tape measure to make sure it is centered on your wall. Then just line up the dowel rods to the large piece and slid it on.  Super easy and inexpensive project to tackle!

If you loved this easy project, go ahead and pin in to Pinterest for safe keeping! You know you will always find a place to add some shelves!
